Where's Nate?

living large in the four-oh-eight. wicked large.

why you bother.

It's been a year since I got my acceptance call from Michigan, which means it's been 51 weeks since I spent a considerable amount of time trying to answer the question: "Why bother getting an MBA?" Things have come full circle. Tonight, I've been making welcome calls to accepted students, answering common questions, and offering some worthless insights.

The first question I got during recruiting season was "Why did you leave Apple?" It's a fair question, really. And it reminds me of when my colleague Paul asked me if anyone told me I was "crazy."

"Which part?" I replied. "The part about moving 2500 miles away from my wife and dog? The part about leaving the hottest company on the planet? Or the part about leaving sunny California to live in ass-cold Michigan?"

I guess it was crazy. But worth it.

Of course, it's also been hell on wheels. But I see the world differently now. My Cisco project has made me realize that not everything is a Marketing problem (but almost everything is). I now have a strong set of tools to solve problems. And it's only going to grow during my electives next year.

So to all of my future colleagues who just got accepted to Ross. Jump in. You won't regret it.

    Dear Nate,
I am a recent admit, and I enjoy your blog from my current location in Japan.

My post-MBA career goals are similar to yours (tech / CA), and I'd like to learn more about how Ross can help me in that regard - in fact, this is one of the only concerns i would have about the program - I have a great impression overall.

Would it be possible to chat during GBR? I'm looking forward to seeing the school for the first time.

    Best wishes,
    Joe Mizuta Seavey

I don't talk to kids from Williams. (Of course, we can chat during GBR. Safe travels to Ann Arbor. I look forward to seeing you next weekend.)

    Hi Nate,

I just found your blog -- very enjoyable. I am heading to B-school this fall (Darden) and desperately want to use a Mac at school. Do you still use one? Have you had any compatibility problems?

If you already posted about this, I apologize, I haven't made it through the whole blog yet.

First off, congrats for getting into Darden. A great school that works harder than we do. : )

As for using a Mac, I still take my trusty PowerBook to campus and have had very few issues here at Ross. However, the school was very clear that they "don't support OS X" which means I've had to set up printers and jump on the wireless on my own.

Good news, though. Ross is now using iTunes to distribute lectures and alumni materials. Perhaps OS X support is on the way. We'll see.

    Thanks for reading,
